Lighting in Early Australia

Monday, August 31st, 2009

A typical domestic scene of a squatter’s bark shack has been captured by many colonial artists such as S. Prout, S. T. Gill and other notables. The paintings generally show a group of people, usually male, sitting in front of a large walk-in fireplace which is lit by a blazing log fire. Occasionally a candle stuck into an empty bottle is seen on the table in the plainly decorated room or the most basic lard impregnated cloth lamps might be seen on the hearth in the flickering light of the fireplace. Most of the early working men’s huts, were equipped in this fashion; a more decorative interior with lined walls, blinds and oil cloth or matting floor usually indicated the presence of a woman in the home.

When settlers arrived with their wives, cash and possessions, interiors showed a marked improvement in elegance and comfort. As soon as they were able, the settlers built larger houses replacing the tents and bark humpies or upgraded and improved upon existing houses. By 1822 Sydney had 59 stone, 221 brick and 773 wooden residences and by 1841 the census showed that there were 769 residences in Melbourne.

Interiors were made practical and comfortable, following the dictates of English fashion and, except for the very rich, lighting was not a priority. As late as the 1830s, Louise Anne Meredith gave a dank description in her letters of home lighting in the colony ‘where candles are not attainable, a light is procured by a bit of rag rolled up stuck into an old cup or pannikin full of dripping and lighted. Homemade mould (tallow) candles are generally used in houses where wax-lights are dispensed with, and certainly vary more in quality than any other article of domestic manufacture.’

Later sketches of the interiors of well-off settlers’ residences verify this bleak picture of domestic lighting. There was small consolation in the fact that the general quality of light fittings and equipment had significantly improved in standard.

Finely crafted candlesticks and custom made blinds were now proudly displayed in parlours, replacing the bottles and tin pans that were used in the kitchens cum dining rooms in previous decades. S. T. Gill’s interior watercolour of the Noufflard’s house in Bligh Street, Sydney in 1856 depicts a scene common to many early Victorian homes.

The drawing room or parlour is lit by a pair of tall elegant candlesticks placed on a central table around which the family and friends would gather at night to read, write, sing or socialise. Often a vase of flowers would be placed in the centre of the table in an arrangement to complement the candlesticks. Sometimes an additional pair of candles would illuminate a piano on which a member of the family would play.

In wealthier homes the number of candlesticks might be increased to include a pair of candlelabra on the overmantel of the fireplace; alternatively an additional pair of two- or three-branched candle wall sconces might be positioned on either side of the sideboard, chiffonier or mirror hung over the fireplace in either the dining or drawing rooms. The rest of the house would be in darkness except, perhaps, for the entry hall where an enclosed hanging lantern would burn one or more candles to illuminate the way for visitors. A candlestick would have been taken to light the way to the bedroom, but these were not kept in bedrooms; they were brought to the kitchen each morning to be trimmed and maintained. Where to Buy Wii Controllers

Monday, August 31st, 2009

The Nintendo Wii is the best selling video game console from Nintendo that uses motion sensing technology to control what’s on the screen. The Wii has been very difficult to find since it was released due to such an overwhelming demand. Many families and house holds have spent days in search of a console with no luck to be found. In most stores the Wii is sold out and still hard to find.

The Nintendo Wii comes with one Wii Remote Controller (also known as a Wiimote), which is the name of the controller used to control the games. Since the Wii promotes family friendly oriented play, four Wiimotes are needed. Since the console is so hard to find, the Wiimotes are nearly impossible since most people will buy an additional three wiimotes.

There’s another piece to the controller called the nunchuck. The Wii Nunchuck is an add-on to the Wiimote that connects via a cable. This piece is typically used to control movement of a character that doesn’t use the Wiimote. The nunchuck is typically held in the left hand while the wiimote is held in the right. The nunchuck has to be purchased separately from the wiimote. So all together, there are two parts to buy to the controller, the wiimote and the nunchuck. The MSRP for both of these devices combined is $60 ($40 for the wiimote, $20 for the nunchuck).

So where do you buy Wii Controllers if they’re all sold out? Many places on the internet sell wii controllers. Since there’s a high demand for them, they may be a little more expensive, but at least you can still get them and not disappoint your family members. Other options would be thrift stores, garage sales, wii controller ebay, buy wiimote ebay, buy cheap wii nunchuck etc. You can also call stores like Gamestop and see when their shipments come. Most employees will tell you when their shipments arrive and whether or not Wii controllers will be available.

Take Surveys, Get Paid – Use a Paid Opinion Survey to Get Paid to Take Online Surveys!

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Paid opinion surveys are a huge business on the Internet. Over 700 survey makers in the U.S. make thousands of surveys each week. Just one of these, Greenfield Online, paid out over $4,200,000 to survey participants in 2007! The reason they pay is to get survey takers with a wide variety of demographics to participate.

The impetus (and the money!) for paid opinion surveys comes from large companies that very much need to know what consumers are thinking. They need to know which ads consumers have seen (to know which ad campaigns are being effective), they need to know consumer preferences for various features of products and services (to plan new products).

We live in a consumption-driven economy where the consumer is king. Producers of goods and services need to know what their consumer customers and clients think and want before developing new products or changing old ones. And most of the producers of goods and services have no direct contact with their ultimate customers.

Just go into any large supermarket, for instance, and look around you. There are probably 3-10,000 different items being sold there. These are the products of thousands of different producers, packers and distributors. A customer pushes his/her shopping cart down an aisle, picks out one product from amongst many competitors, tosses it into the cart and walks on.

Now WHY did they do that? Pick that particular brand? The marketing managers of all of the competing companies are dying to know! They want to influence buyers to buy more, to select THEM instead of others. They want very much to know what the prospective buyer was thinking at the point of sale and why they chose as they did.

So they hire market research experts to measure public opinion, find out, and tell them. One of the tools that market researchers use is a paid opinion survey. And so another survey gets commissioned.

Now, for you to take surveys, get paid for doing so, you need to get your name on the lists of potential survey takers that the survey makers maintain. You do this by getting a good list of good survey makers and applying to each of them online. It’s easy and fast. Just fill in the blanks with your contact info and demographic data (gender, age, zip code, etc.), and your contact information.

The idea will be to sign up with the 20% of the survey makers that offer legitimate paid online surveys that pay well, pay ontime and respect your privacy. Also the 40% of second tier that maybe don’t pay so well or so fast but are still worthwhile.

If your goal is to get paid to take online surveys, you will want to avoid the remaining 40%. These are no-pay/low-pay survey makers and sales companies trying to act like survey makers to get your data. They and their buddies want to stuff your inbox with sales offers until you buy something from them. Absolute waste of time and needless hassle.

Avoid “free lists” of survey makers. These are mostly paid for by way of recruiting fees paid to the list distributors by that lower 40%, to recruit “fresh meat” for them. The good survey makers don’t advertise. They don’t need to. So they are harder to find.

So pick a good paid survey membership site, join them and get a copy of their list. You’ll make enough money with your first 2-3 paid opinion surveys to easily get back your membership fee.

To pick a good one, insist on a strong money-back guarantee, and then look for one with a low (3-6%) refund rate. Avoid any with refund rates that are unknown (usually means “high”) or are as high as 9-10%. That way you position yourself to be amongst the happy clients of a low refund site, and you have a guarantee.

Deal With Large Orders Carefully To Avoid Fraud

Monday, August 31st, 2009

The world of online transactions can be a fraught with peril for a small business owner, but there are ways you can protect yourself against fraud. Scammers have developed elaborate methods of billing stolen credit card information for big sums of money. A big red flag is when you receive an order for a quantity of merchandise far larger than your typical order size. If this occurs, you need to take extra precautionary steps to ensure the legitimacy of the order.

For instance, if your store typically receives orders for merchandise worth a few hundred dollars, and then you receive notification that a customer has placed an order for several thousand dollars worth of merchandise, you should see this as a sign that there may be a problem. Extra research into the purchase is required, even though the address and credit card have been verified through the electronic payment gateway. Address Verification and Card Value Verification are not enough to determine whether a card has been stolen.

You must properly vet unusually large transactions before any merchandise is shipped. A con artist will obviously not have the goods shipped to the address on the stolen card. Your shopping cart software will often have a built-in feature to detect discrepancies in distance between the credit card address and the IP (Internet Protocol) address of the purchaser. If not, there are sites online that can perform this function of locating IP addresses.

For orders you have reason to suspect, you should also contact the customer directly to determine their legitimacy. If the customer is a fraud, they won’t likely provide a real phone number. Their e-mail address will also typically be from a Hotmail, Yahoo or similar such free service. You should e-mail the customer and request a reply to verify the order, and perhaps even ask that they fax you a signed credit card authorization form.

Once you’ve taken these steps, make sure you tell the customer that you will require their signature upon receipt of the merchandise, or it will be returned. After this, make sure you contact your merchant account provider, and let them know what steps you took to try and verify the suspicious order. Merchant account providers will likely put a hold on funds that are flagged as being unusually large. Speak to a representative to learn if anything else needs to be done, or if they need to take any steps themselves to verify the customer.

So be cautious, take the extra bit of time to go through these simple steps, and protect yourself from online fraud.

How to unlock your iphone and be healthy

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

With Apple’s iPhone being so popular, it’s no surprise that people want to unlock it. When you hear the term “unlock iphone“, it basically means hacking your iPhone so that you can use it with a different service provider (the default is AT&T). Remember that the iPhone is actually a real phone, so you need a service provider for it. It turns out that many people are unsatisfied with AT&T, which is why they look for ways to unlock their iphone. The good news is that this is really pretty easy. There is lots of really cheap software (for $20 or less) that can perform the job for you.

Of course, while gadgets like the Apple iPhone are fun to play with, the thing you’ll always want to be most concerned about is your health. This is why keeping fit is so important. The popular advice of doing 30 minutes of daily exercise is in fact very good, because jogging around the oval or walking will help you refresh yourself and work better. If you are overweight, then exercising is crucial when it comes to weight loss.

Perhaps something even worse than being overweight is having yeast infection, which mainly infects females. Luckily, though, it’s relatively easy to get rid of yeast infection. Millions of people have had it over the years, and there are many safe, effective and natural cures out there. As with anything, if you have the drive and motivation to cure your yeast infection or lose weight, then it will happen.

What Tricks I Use To Potty Train My Dog

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

So why is my yorkie always so excited to use my pee pads? There are a few different reasons I will share with you. I strongly believe that when a dog does something right you must reward them. Whether it be a treat or love. When potty training my dog I always give here a treat after each use on the puppy pads. When I would leave the house for a few hours she would wait for me to get home. The reason??? She wanted that treat after I watched her go potty. Always remember to be consistent in your training.

Make sure when using housebreaking pads that you change them regularly. If they build up to much potty mess, the dog will want to go other places. My yorkie will wait for me to change them and immediately run over and potty on them right after. Then she patient waits for her reward. In the beginning make sure you regularly take your dog to there potty area.

Pee-pads.com is the best place to buy puppy pads. Buying in bulk can save you a lot of money. They offer 3 different sized pee pads to fit your potty area needs. The smallest size is 17”x24”. Collagen Supplements – Do They Work?

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

In our quest to remain younger looking, we try to eat a healthy diet and take plenty of supplements. We increase our water intake and practice deep breathing exercises to make sure that we are properly oxygenated. We avoid those harmful sun rays by slathering on plenty of sun block and donning a hat with a wide brim. We may even practice yoga or Pilates, to get the flexibility we had in our youth. So why isn’t all of this working? We still look in the mirror and see our hair is thinning and lines on our faces that we swear weren’t there yesterday. The reason that we have not stopped the signs of aging is because we are not really aware of what is actually needed.

The reason that the younger generation has such smooth, tight skin and glossy, full hair, is because of their natural stores of collagen. Collagen is found in the tissues that are responsible for our skin, hair and nails. As we get older, this supply diminishes with age and our skin begins to sag. We may also notice that our hair is not as full and lustrous as it once was. Many people, who suffer from joint pain, take aspirin and apply hot or cold packs, trying to alleviate the discomfort. Collagen is also responsible for strong joints, which is why we may suddenly develop aches in our joints as time goes by.

Some people turn to collagen injections that are injected into facial tissues to smooth wrinkles. This is only a temporary fix and you can be assured that future injections will be required in order to obtain the look of youth.

Another way to replace lost collagen is by taking supplements that contain them. This is a way to treat the collagen loss from the inside out. Topical collagen will be temporary at best, but when taken orally, the effects will be much longer lasting.

And there are collagen face lift creams which activates the skins natural production of collagen. There are a few sites where they have collagen face lift cream reviews.

There are plenty of supplements to be found in various health food stores. There are two types of collagen available, Type I and Type II. These types of collagen are the ones that are in our hair, nails, skin, muscles, bones, eyes, teeth and tendons. They are also responsible for strong cartilage support. By taking these types of oral collagen supplements, we can replenish that which is naturally lost with age. Keep in mind that there is no such thing as the fountain of youth. You still have to maintain a healthy lifestyle and good nutritional habits, in order to look and feel healthy and youthful. By taking oral supplements, you can add even more benefits to your already healthy regimen. It certainly is less painful than getting injections and will last a lot longer as well.

Ventless Fireplaces are Taking Over the Traditional Wood Burning Fireplaces

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

While brick fireplaces aren’t cheap, installing a central heating system can be almost twice as expensive and doesn’t enhance your home decor like a fireplace.

Appealing outdoor fireplaces are today available at affordable prices, are portable and are also easy to use. In the presence of an outdoor fireplace family and friendly gatherings will also be much more fun due to the right amount of warmth that it will bring to your backyard, patio and pool area.

Manufactured fireplaces are designed for new construction only and are perfect for new home jobsites and remodel projects. Accessories and venting are available for all fireplaces, installation services are also available or save money and do it yourself.

Since they do not require a flue, chimney, or external venting ducts, ventless fireplaces are much less expensive to install compared to traditional gas or wood fireplaces. Ventless gas fireplaces or heaters use natural gas or propane as fuel and burns the gas with air from the room.

Ventless, vent free or unvented fireplaces are designed to expel combustion gasses and moisture directly back into the room. Ventless fireplaces are also popping up in unique settings like between floor to ceiling columns and as focal points for home theatres and entertainment areas.

Gas logs and gas fireplaces are a plastic experience, just not the real thing. Humankind has evolved with real wood fire, and the quality of light rays and heat radiated from a wood fire cannot be imitated by a controlled gas flame piped in from who knows where. If you insist, some fireplaces are environmentally friendly, with clean-burning gel that does not leave any messy soot, smoke or ashes behind.

While they produce some radiant heat, most wood burning fireplaces are primarily decorative. Even heat circulating models still pull a tremendous amount of air from the home. In addition, keep your fireplace damper closed unless a fireplace is going. Keeping the damper open is like keeping a 48 inch window wide open during the winter as it allows warm air to go right up the chimney.

To clean a fireplace that does not get a lot of use, you probably will not have to do much more than scrub it gently. Use a brush that has stiff bristles, but avoid a wire brush as it may cause damage.

If you have an older fireplace strongly consider installing a fireplace insert. Fireplace inserts are additives that help to burn wood, natural gas, and wood pellets, and will transform your current fireplace from an energy liability into an energy asset for your home. You can then have the warmth and romance of a fireplace whenever you want.

You can change types of fireplaces and find your favorite look. A fireplace that is too huge steals attention from other center pieces such as the sofa set or a large painting in the living room. What you want is a nice cozy corner.

How To Print Laser Labels

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Printing high quality self-adhesive labels on a laser printer is easy. All you need to do is to place them in the paper tray so they will print portrait, put your printer software on the “labels” setting and then print as usual. For improved positioning of the print you can use the media bypass slot usually located above the paper tray, this reduces the number of rollers the label sheet passes through and helps to prevent the print from slewing left at the top and right at the bottom of the A4 label sheet.

The labels setting on your printer driver software is usually in the “settings” or “properties” section, and these options are on that rather annoying page that pops up every time you print something. Some of the more expensive or modern laser printers have auto sensing, which means they automatically sense the thickness of the media they are loaded with.

You do have to print A4 labels in a portrait direction; this is because, like wood, paper has a grain direction. The grain direction is from the top to the bottom of the sheet rather than side to side. The effect of this is that the paper is stronger along its length; this means that the labels are better supported on the backing paper and less likely to peel off the backing paper during printing.

Laser printers are not designed to print labels, they are designed to print thinner A4 sheets, so it is always a good idea to read the printer manufacturer’s manual to find out what they advise for label printing. To enable the printers to print labels well you need to use laser labels made from laser grade paper and cut in a layout that also reduces the chances of separation from the backing during printing. Laser grade paper has a specified smoothness so that the laser toner can attain the resolution you require.

Laser labels also have a particular water content this is essential and helps the toner to key into the paper when it goes through the fuser in your printer. (The fuser is like a heated mangle with the paper passing between two rollers one of which is heated.) If the labels dry out then the laser print will smudge so always keep unused labels in their packaging. Laser labels also have a [particular|certain} type of backing paper which gives enough friction so that the rollers in the printer can move it accurately.
