It’s important that you learn to apply these techniques, although if you apply courtesy, friendliness, honesty and you know what you’re talking about, you’re 90% there. Not difficult when you consider it.

I know of quite a few owners of small businesses who would never consider themselves sales people but have remarkable success at selling their products and services by just being themselves. Is this being a good sales person? Probably.

As I mentioned before with my friend, he fosters friendships with his regular customers. This fosters loyalty to the business by the customer, quite often regardless of price, because they get preferential treatment. You’ve probably had the feeling yourself when you constantly use a particular business and each time you walk in the people don’t just ask for the order.

Generally, sales people feel awkward about asking the customer for the order. These sales people will never be really successful in sales. A lot of sales are lost simply because the sales person doesn’t put the onus back on the customer to make a decision, they simply leave the decision up in the air which allows the potential customer to quietly drift out the door without having to commit themselves to a decision. How many times do you do this? I do it all the time and think to myself, “I’m glad nobody put me under pressure, I probably would have spent money”.

Before you open up a book or article that you’re going to study or use for research write down all the questions you want answered. Then try to answer the questions with whatever knowledge you have and even make up things that are NOT true to answer the question.

I know this sounds strange but keep reading, When you do this, your brain gets primed and ready to learn the REAL information in the book or article.

Your mind becomes focused like a laser beam on the information you need. And if you’re doing research, you’re able to easily bypass the information you do NOT need to answer your questions. That’s how I saved 40 hours of research for my client’s proposal.

I noticed I only needed to answer three questions with the big stack of research materials on my desk. I didn’t actually NEED to read them all. So what I did was skim through the materials and find exactly what I needed to write the proposal and no more.

You can use this idea for any paper you’ll write in high school or college too. And of course when studying for the SAT Essay or any other part of the SAT the same tip applies. Write out what questions you want answered. Answer them. Then find the REAL answers in the text.
